Dangriga Town is recognized as the cultural capital in Belize and is the capital of Stann Creek District. Tourists are likely to recognize the town cultural location with drumming and celebration at its core.
Getting to Dangriga is just as easy as getting to Hopkins given they're so close to each other. The advantage Dangriga has over Hopkins is that buses travel directly to the Town whereas Hopkins needs an additional taxi ride from the highway intersection. If you'd like a direct trip to Dangriga, hiring a shuttle service might be a good choice for you.
A private transfer service gives you and your friends a few benefits including:
- comfort of having pitstops for restroom or food
- privacy for you and your group
- ability to customize your trip and stop at any time
- social distancing compared to public bus
- personalized service from a local guide
If traveling on the road to Dangriga, you'll notice the highway is a lot more hilly than that of the Belize District. That's due to the Maya Mountains found on the west with the highest peak being Victoria Peak at 1,120 meters (3,670 ft).
Choosing Dangriga as a home base is a good idea if you want to be close to the reef and rainforest. Hopkins would be another alternative if you enjoy the vibes of small villages. Dangriga does offer a few unique attractions including Studio Gallery Cayetano which displays colorful paintings of Garifuna artist Pen Cayetano.
Other activities to do in Dangriga include visiting the local market or taking a tour at Marie Sharp's Factory (The local pepper sauce), taking a Garifuna cooking class and visiting Gulisi Garifuna Museum.
