The border between Belize & Guatemala lies between the Belizean town of Benque Viejo del Carmen and the Guatemalan town of Melchor de Mencos.
Getting to the Belize—Guatemalan border requires a trip to western Belize until arriving the border town of Benque Viejo. Taxis are a common form of transport between San Ignacio and the border but operate as a shared service, and as a result go slower than usual. For a direct trip, a shuttle service is a good choice.
A private transfer service gives you and your friends a few benefits including:
- comfort of having pitstops for restroom or food
- privacy for you and your group
- ability to customize your trip and stop at any time
- social distancing compared to public bus
- personalized service from a local guide
After crossing the Guatemalan border, the first major town in Guatemala is Flores in El Petén region. Flores is a small island on a lake and is a backpacker hotspot with many activities to do in the region. Its popularity is attributed to its proximity to the Tikal, one of the largest archaeological sites in Mesoamerica.
For the latest information about the border protocols, be sure to read the official Belize Tourism Board page. Rules on land border, sea border and covid are constantly being updated.
