Punta Gorda Town is sometimes referred to as the forgotten land by locals. But forgotten has the advantage of having hidden gems. Known as PG, the region is notably recognized as the hub for a cultural mix of Mayan, Garifuna and East Indian people.
Getting to Punta Gorda requires four long hours of driving if starting off at the Belize City or the airport. Despite it being a ride with spectacular views, you need to arrive the country by midday to have daylight driving hours. Alternatively you can take a domestic flight with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. If you want to enjoy the highway views, booking a shuttle service can be a solid middle ground.
A private transfer service gives you and your friends a few benefits including:
- comfort of having pitstops for restroom or food
- privacy for you and your group
- ability to customize your trip and stop at any time
- social distancing compared to public bus
- personalized service from a local guide
The drive to Punta Gorda is a long but beautiful trip. Driving during the day is recommended to enjoy the magnificent mountains as backdrop. If given the opportunity, make some stops along the highway to try the local food being sold like tamales and creole bread. Dishes sold alongside the highway are normally cooked on a fireheart and have a smoked flavor.
The small town of PG doesn't have a wide range of hotels but it can serve as a good home base if visiting the local Mayan Ruins and rivers.
Attractions in the area include visiting Lubaantun, Nim Li Punit, Rio Blanco Falls, taking a chocolate tour and taking a trip to Snake Caye or Tobacco Caye.
