San Pedro Town is located on the island of Ambergris Caye which is the largest island in Belize. San Pedro is also the second largest town in Belize District. The island is the most popular of all the islands in Belize due to its luxury beach resorts.
Fun Fact: Local inhabitants are known as San Pedranos and most of them originally came from Mexico.
Getting to the San Pedro Town is as easy as taking a water taxi from Belize City. It's located an hour and a half away and has daily runs. For a faster and more scenic trip, you can also ride on a hopper flight with Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. If pre-purchased, the airfare can be fairly economical.
The majority of travelers choose to spend half their time inland and half their time on the islands. San Pedro can be a good base if you enjoy nightlife and luxury stays. The island is home to tons of restaurants with unique cuisine infusions. It is also home to a large community of expats spread across the entire island.
Activities on the island are plenty with the easy access to the Belize Barrier Reef and beaches. One of the must-do experiences is snorkeling with Sharks at Shark Ray Ally or at Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Visiting the not-so-secret Secret Beach is also high on everyone's bucket list.
If you're a scuba diver, you might want to visit the largest sinkhole in the world — The Great Blue Hole. The smaller neighboring Half Moon Caye is also a fantastic place to scuba dive or snorkel.
